avoiding “broken formation”

A broken formation occurs when the group is no longer in a consistent staggered formation. There will be situations where another vehicle not with the group will intervene and break the motorcade chain.  Usually, that vehicle will be there temporarily and move back, allowing the chain to re-engage.  In the event, that doesn’t happen, then the broken section(s) should become their own chain and the designated Blockers will resume the role as Tail Gunner and Lead Road Captain of the broken chain, respectfully until the chains are merged together and the Blockers will retain their original positions.

  • Moving forward within the group is usually required when a Blocker has left the formation to block or take another role for a broken chain. When this occurs, the biker behind speeds up taking the voided position.  They do not, switch sides within the lane!  When the Blocker returns, a space should be made available by falling back allowing the Blocker to enter their previous space.

  • Never should a biker cross their formation lane unless it is for safety reasons.
